How we technically set up projects.

From the initial idea to the live system – our process is transparent, collaborative, and focused on rapid value delivery. Here's an overview of how we structure technology projects at kraftwerk:

Step 1
Discovery & Technology Assessment
Every project begins with a shared understanding: What needs to be built, for whom, and why? In the discovery phase, we analyze requirements, existing systems, and technical constraints. Based on this, we recommend the appropriate technology stack and define a realistic roadmap.
Step 2
Architecture & Technology Decisions
Based on the discovery, we make informed architectural decisions: Which frameworks, databases, cloud services, and integrations will be used? We transparently document these decisions and align them with the client – including weighing make-or-buy decisions.
Step 3
Agile Development in Sprints
Development takes place in short, iterative sprints (typically 1–2 weeks). Each sprint delivers testable, runnable results. Regular sprint reviews ensure transparency and enable early feedback, allowing us to remain flexible with changing requirements and reduce project risk.
Step 4
Continuous Integration & Deployment (CI/CD)
From the outset, we set up automated CI/CD pipelines – using Azure DevOps or Jenkins. Every code change undergoes automated tests (Unit, Integration, E2E with Playwright), code quality checks (SonarQube), and if successful, is automatically deployed to the respective environment (Dev, Staging, Production).
Step 5
Quality Assurance & Testing
Testing is not a subsequent step, but an integral part of every sprint. In addition to automated tests, we conduct targeted manual tests for complex user flows. Before the go-live, a comprehensive acceptance test is performed together with the client.
Step 6
Go-live & Handover
For us, a project launch is not a surprise, but the result of a structured process. We actively support the go-live, monitor the initial operational phase, and ensure all systems run stably. Optionally, after the launch, we hand over the project to an internal client team – including documentation and
Handover Workshop.
Step 7
Ongoing Support & Further Development
We support many of our client projects beyond the initial launch, offering retainer agreements for ongoing development, security updates, performance optimization, and technical support. We view ourselves as a long-term technology partner, not merely a project implementation service provider.

FAQ: Technology Team

What exactly does the kraftwerk Technology Department do?

The kraftwerk Technology Department is the technical heart of our agency group. We develop customized software solutions, implement leading CMS and e-commerce platforms, advise companies on technology and data issues, and realize AI-powered solutions from prototype to productive system. With over 25 years of experience and a modern technology stack – from .NET and Vue.js to Azure and Google Cloud, and AI integrations – we are the right partner for digital transformations of any scale.

Does kraftwerk work agilely?

Yes, agile methods are an integral part of our workflow. We work in short sprints, deliver initial results early, and iterate together with our clients. This enables fast time-to-market, high flexibility for changing requirements, and consistently high quality.

How long does a typical project take to implement?

That depends heavily on the scope and complexity. We can realize simple websites or prototypes in a few weeks. More complex portals, custom software, or enterprise CMS implementations typically take 3 to 6 months. For all projects, we rely on clear milestones and transparent communication.

Does kraftwerk also offer ongoing support and maintenance?

Yes. We don't just support projects until launch; we also offer retainer agreements for ongoing development, technical support, security updates, and performance optimization. Many of our clients have been working with us continuously for years or even decades.

FAQ: CMS & Web Development

Which CMS does kraftwerk recommend for my project?

That depends on your requirements. For enterprise projects with complex workflows and multi-site requirements, we recommend TYPO3 or Umbraco – these are our platforms of choice for professional, demanding projects. For lean corporate websites, blogs, and simpler e-commerce projects, WordPress can be a practical choice. For maximum frontend flexibility, headless setups with all three platforms are suitable. We would be happy to advise you in a non-binding initial consultation.

What is Headless CMS and do I need it?

With a headless CMS, the backend (content management) and frontend (presentation) are separated. The content management system delivers content via an API, while the frontend is freely selectable – for example, with Vue.js/Nuxt, React, or other frameworks. This allows for maximum flexibility, excellent performance, and future-proof architecture. Headless is particularly useful if you want to deliver content across multiple channels (web, app, digital signage, etc.).

Can you migrate or modernize existing CMS installations?

Yes. We have extensive experience in CMS migrations – for example, from old TYPO3 versions to current LTS releases, from WordPress multisites to scalable headless setups, or from legacy systems to modern platforms. We analyze your existing installation, develop a migration strategy, and execute the migration with minimal downtime.

Which e-commerce platform does kraftwerk use?

We primarily work with Shopify and Sylius – two platforms that optimally cover different needs: Shopify for fast, scalable cloud shops with low maintenance; Sylius as a powerful open-source framework for individual, enterprise-grade e-commerce solutions based on Symfony. For specific projects, we also use WooCommerce. The choice of platform depends on your business requirements, expected growth, and existing system integrations.

How does kraftwerk optimize the checkout experience?

We analyze the entire customer journey – from the first page visit to the completed purchase – and identify drop-off points. Based on data (heatmaps, session recordings, conversion funnels), we develop optimization measures: simplified checkout flows, additional payment methods, improved mobile experience, and A/B tests. The goal is always a measurable increase in the conversion rate.

FAQ: AI & Innovation

Which AI technologies does kraftwerk use?

We work with leading AI platforms and models: OpenAI GPT (ChatGPT), Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Azure OpenAI Service, and specialized open-source models. Depending on the use case, we select the appropriate technology – whether for Generative AI in content processes, NLP-based chatbots, computer vision, or predictive analytics.

What is AI Prototyping and what does it cost?

In AI Prototyping, we develop a functional proof-of-concept for an AI idea in short, focused sprints – fast enough to make real business decisions before larger investments are made. Furthermore, we support AI projects beyond the PoC stage, all the way to a fully productive solution. Costs depend on the scope; typical AI prototyping sprints start from just a few days of effort. Contact us – we will provide a customized offer.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and why is it important?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the optimization of web content for visibility in AI-powered search queries and generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and similar. While classic SEO aims for search engine rankings, GEO focuses on ensuring that AI systems recognize and cite your content as a relevant, trustworthy source. kraftwerk is one of the few agencies in Austria that actively develops and implements GEO strategies.

FAQ: Technology & Processes

What is the kraftwerk Technology Radar?

The kraftwerk Technology Radar is our public overview of all technologies, frameworks, tools, and methods that we actively use, evaluate, or recommend. Based on the concept of the Thoughtworks Technology Radar, it transparently provides information about our current technology stack and our technological direction. Viewable at: https://techradar.kraftwerk.co.at/

How does kraftwerk ensure code quality?

For us, quality assurance is not a downstream step, but an integral part of the development process. We rely on code reviews, automated unit and integration tests, end-to-end tests with Playwright, and static code analysis with SonarQube. CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, Jenkins) ensure that only tested code is deployed.

Which cloud platforms does kraftwerk support?

We primarily work with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), but also have experience with AWS. The choice of cloud platform depends on your existing infrastructures, compliance requirements, and your project's technology stack.

Does kraftwerk also offer on-premise solutions?

Yes. Not every project is suitable for the public cloud – for example, when strict data protection regulations, existing infrastructures, or internal compliance requirements necessitate an on-premise environment. kraftwerk also implements on-premise deployments and collaborates with two established Austrian hosting providers. This partnership allows us to offer legally compliant infrastructure solutions in Austria – fully GDPR-compliant, with data stored domestically. This is a significant advantage, especially for companies and organizations with high data protection demands.

Does kraftwerk also develop mobile apps?

Yes. We develop native and cross-platform mobile apps with .NET MAUI (Android, iOS, Windows, macOS from a single codebase) as well as Progressive Web Apps (PWA) with Vue.js/Nuxt. For specific requirements, we also work with React Native.
